After a year of wearing outfits that focus on the waist up, it feels overdue (and very welcome) to throw on a dress, doesn’t it? But it’s not always as simple as it may sound, being there’s just so many to choose from – think patterned styles, knit styles, long styles, short styles, and all styles in between. Turns out there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Luckily, you’ve got us to help you out (well you’ve got our stylist Millie, she did most of the work).
We spoke to the senior stylist all about the dress styles she’s championing this season and how she’s planning on wearing them. From daywear to evening wear to the perfect dress for this unpredictable transitional weather – we’ve got you covered for pretty much all bases. And that’s good, because your joggers could use a break.
1. The knitted dress

On first look, a knitted dress doesn’t feel like the most appropriate for the upcoming season, but for this in-between weather we’re experiencing right now (which let’s be honest, is just constant rain), it’s pretty ideal. In the daytime, “it’s all about the looser ribbed options styled with just a flat sandal,” Millie says. Then, come evening “something a little more form-fitting styled simply with a gold chain and a chunky black boot adds an edge.” Whichever time of day, Millie points out that this style and material always look best in a midi or maxi length. Noted.
2. Max power

Whether it’s maxi, tiered, puffed sleeved, or just exaggerated details – volume is top of Millie’s list when it comes to dress styles this season. The best part? Since they’re so statement by nature, styling is best kept super simple, i.e. with some flats and your day-to-day jewellery. This way the silhouette can really do the talking. Plus, dress styles like this often come in lightweight fabrics like linen so they’re great for the warm-weather or, dare we say, a summer holiday.
3. Cottagecore

We suspect you’re already pretty familiar with this aesthetic that started trickling its way in back in spring last year. Turns out, it’s most definitely here to stay. Picture picnics on gingham blankets, straw baskets, wildflower meadows – you get the idea. Now when it comes to the clothes, florals, frilled collars, and embroidery define the look and if you pair it with some trainers, it will feel a little more city-ready. Fear not, this isn’t strictly a daytime option either: slip on some mules to easily transition the look into something more formal.
4. Slip dress

The beloved slip dress is forever admired for its versatility, “working equally as well for your best friend’s wedding as it does for after-work drinks,” Millie says. The secret is all in what you pair it with. Here are three options: layer with a t-shirt, leather jacket and chunky boots for an edgier feel, or with a blazer and heeled mule to make it feel extra special. If all else fails, trainers with a knit over the top is, in our eyes, the perfect daytime look.
